Summer 2020 FAQ
What programs are cancelled this summer?
All traditional camp sessions for the 2020 summer season have been cancelled. This includes all overnight sessions, each week of our traditional day camp, our Teen Leadership trip, and Counselor in Training (CIT) programs.
Is there a possibility that some activities will take place at camp this summer if circumstance permit?
The traditional programs, provided in the way that they are typically offered, will not be possible this summer. However, we will continue to monitor guidelines and recommendations. We have not eliminated the possibility that Camp Abnaki may be able to offer some alternative programming this summer. Currently, the area of greatest focus is day camp. If day camp can run, it will be sufficiently different from what had been planned. Additionally, if circumstances permit, we may look to schedule a limited overnight experience for families.
Why was camp cancelled?
The decision to suspend camp this summer was an extremely difficult one. We have worked hard to explore all the different options, using as many of the available resources as possible. In making the decision we referred to guidelines from the CDC, Vermont Department of Health, and American Camp Association. We consulted with Vermont Camping Association, and the National YMCA Camp Cabinet. After receiving the guidance and recommendations from these entities, our leadership, with the support of the Greater Burlington YMCA’s senior management we agreed that it would not be possible to run our traditional camps in a safe way.
What do I need to do right now?
There is nothing you need to do at this moment. All Camp families will receive a separate e-mail within the week with information on the financial implications of cancellation. You should anticipate options regarding any payments you have already made, including a full refund. Campers, you should look out for special messages sent to your parents with ways to stay connected to camp throughout the summer.
How are you handling tuition, refunds and deposits?
Detailed information will be shared in a follow up email in a few days. You can anticipate there will be several options for you to consider regarding any payments you have already made, including a full refund.
Can I come visit camp?
We completely understand the desire to come visit and how important camp is to all our families, staff, and alumni. At this point, for the safety of our staff and the property, we are keeping the facility closed to visitors. This is something we will continue to monitor and revisit as we learn more. As soon as we have a plan to safely welcome visitors, we will share this with you. We look forward to welcoming everyone back as soon as possible.
When can I register for camp for next summer?
We know that Abnaki families will be anxious for the summer of 2021, so we made the decision to open registration early. Camp registration for next summer will be posted on the homepage of our website beginning August 1.
Will there be Camp next year?
Yes! We have already started planning for next summer. We fully anticipate camp being operational for summer 2021 and expect to make it the best summer yet!
